Simpson & Duffy

Simpson and Duffy.

John Simpson Kirkpatrick was born in England but came to work and travel in Australia. After the Simpson and Duffyoutbreak of WW1 he joined the army with the 3rd Field Ambulance along with the thousands of volunteers believing he would get a free passage home to see his mother and sister. Instead, at dawn on April 25th 1915 he landed on Gallipoli and became part of the ANZAC legend.

I was determined that Simpson's gallant yet gentle story should be retold for children. Ester's pastel illustrations are stunning and she made certain that the flowers she has depicted on Simpson's grave are the wild flowers that grow on the Gallipoli peninsula.

In 2003 this best selling book was shortlisted for 'Australian Awards for Excellence in Education Publishing'. Reprinted in 2008.
